When I do a system update to the Ubuntu 24.04.01 image I am using, my computer stops booting. The splash screen is only show for about half the normal duration, followed by a white screen stating that the computer cannot boot.

I am using a recent Lenovo T14s laptop.

After I saw this, I installed a fresh Ubuntu version (my computer was only a few weeks old, so I wasn't yet concerned by data loss). I could then reproduce the issue by updating again (apt-get update && apt-get upgrade).

What can I do in such instances? How can I debug such issue? I tried to boot in recovery mode but that didn't work.

Thanks for the great comments. I could restore the OS.

The white screen I saw was "Oh No. Something Went Wrong". See here: After Upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04: "Oh no! Something went wrong" for a related question.

I then had to boot into recovery mode, this questions helped me achieve that: How to start Ubuntu in Console mode. It was important to enable networking to download updates.

I saw the gnome-center and nvidia drivers didn't get installed with the update prior to the boot failure. I installed them and could boot the computer afterwards again.
