I've just installed Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on my iMac 21.5 mid 2010.

I've followed this guide:

http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/how-install-linux-on-mac-3637265/

The installation went perfectly, but when I rebooted it gave me the "Remove installation problem" error . So I manually rebooted my machine. I then received a purple screen and then a totally black screen appears. After a few seconds I heard the sound of ubuntu (the drums thing) but nothing appears on screen.

Does anyone know what the problem is and how can I fix it? It's my first installation of Ubuntu and I don't know what to do...

I reccomend installing Pop!_OS.

DO NOT CLICK "Erase disk and install Pop!_OS"; it will break everything. You must custom install Pop!_OS to preserve the Apple UEFI partition required for system operation.

How to install Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on an iMac:

  1. Plug in the iMac and connect an Apple keyboard and plug in install media.
  2. Turn on the iMac
  3. Hold Option until boot devices show.
  4. Select EFI boot.
  5. Follow installer and select "Erase disk and install Ubuntu"
  6. Remove install media when it says to do so.
  7. When the computer starts up after the reboot, open a terminal and run sudo apt update && sudo apt install ssh && sudo ufw allow ssh
  8. On another computer, open a terminal and type ssh <username>@<computername>.local
  9. Type yes when it asks about a fingerprint.

If the iMac ever boots to a black screen(with full backlight):

  1. Wait for the iMac to boot up
  2. Type ssh <username>@<computername>.local in the other computer and then run sudo systemctl suspend
  3. Wake up the iMac by presing a key on the keyboard or its power button.
  4. It should be fixed
